Overview

The conjunctiva is a thin, vascularized mucous membrane that covers the anterior sclera and lines the internal surface of the eyelids. It serves as a critical protective barrier for the eye, producing mucus through specialized goblet cells to maintain the stability of the tear film and providing immune surveillance via conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) (StatPearls, 2023). While not a single molecular target itself, the conjunctiva is the primary site for the administration of topical ophthalmic medications and contains numerous therapeutic targets, including histamine receptors and adrenergic receptors (NIH, 2022). Pathological conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis, infectious conjunctivitis, and dry eye disease involve the recruitment of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators within this tissue (PubMed, 2021). Understanding the conjunctiva's anatomy and physiology is essential for drug delivery, as its permeability and vascularity significantly influence the pharmacokinetics of ocular therapies (Mayo Clinic, 2024). It is considered an anatomical region rather than a specific protein or molecular entity in pharmacological databases.
