Overview

Conserved internal viral proteins, such as nucleoproteins (NP), are structural proteins found inside the virion of many viruses. They are less exposed to immune pressure than surface proteins and thus tend to be highly conserved across different strains. Their conservation makes them attractive targets for broad-spectrum antiviral strategies and vaccine development. The primary role of nucleoprotein is to encapsidate the viral genome, protecting it from degradation and forming a template for transcription and replication. Because they are highly conserved and immunogenic but less variable than surface antigens, nucleoproteins serve as promising targets for universal vaccines or broad-spectrum antivirals.
