Copper-transporting ATPase 1 (ATP7A) is a transmembrane protein crucial for copper homeostasis. It regulates copper levels by transporting copper ions across cellular membranes using energy from ATP hydrolysis. It supplies copper to enzymes essential for connective tissue formation, nervous system function, and other physiological processes. When intracellular copper levels rise, ATP7A relocates to the plasma membrane to export excess copper out of the cell. Mutations or dysfunctions in ATP7A are linked to Menkes Syndrome and Occipital Horn Syndrome.
