Overview

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped outermost layer of the eye that covers the front portion, including the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber. It acts as a protective barrier against debris, germs, and other foreign material while also playing a crucial role in vision by refracting (bending) light to help focus it onto the retina. The cornea consists of five or six distinct layers: Epithelium, Bowman's Layer, Stroma, Dua’s Layer (sometimes listed separately), Descemet's Membrane, and Endothelium. The cornea is essential both structurally—as an external shield—and optically—as a major refractive element—of human vision.
