The cornea consists of specialized layers: the outer epithelium, which provides a tight barrier; the stroma, containing keratocytes that maintain the extracellular matrix; and the inner endothelium, which regulates hydration to ensure transparency (StatPearls, 2023). As a therapeutic entity, "Corneal cells" is categorized as an incorrect target name because it represents a complex tissue rather than a specific molecule like a receptor or enzyme. However, these cells contain numerous specific targets for drug therapy, such as growth factor receptors involved in wound healing and inflammatory mediators associated with dry eye disease (PubMed, 2021). Ocular drugs typically aim to modulate the behavior of these cells to treat conditions such as keratitis, Fuchs' dystrophy, or corneal scarring. Monitoring these cells often involves assessing endothelial density or epithelial integrity to ensure drug safety and efficacy (Mayo Clinic, 2023).
