Corneal nerves are the primary sensory nerves innervating the ocular surface, especially the cornea. They originate mainly from the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V), with their cell bodies located in the trigeminal ganglion[1][3][4]. The cornea is among the most densely innervated tissues in humans, containing thousands of free epithelial endings per square millimeter[3][4]. These nerves are responsible for sensing temperature, chemical and mechanical stimuli—including pain—and play a critical role in maintaining ocular surface homeostasis by mediating protective reflexes such as blinking and tear secretion[1][3]. Damage or dysfunction of these nerves can lead to significant clinical problems including dry eye disease, neurotrophic keratopathy, impaired wound healing, and neuropathic ocular pain syndromes[1][4].
