Corneal stromal regeneration refers to the process of restoring the structure and function of the corneal stroma, which constitutes about 90% of the cornea's thickness and is essential for its transparency and refractive properties. Therapeutic approaches include cell-based therapies, decellularized/re-cellularized scaffolds, bioengineered scaffolds, 3D bioprinting, and exosome/miRNA therapy. The goal is to promote organized collagen deposition, proper keratocyte function, and minimize scar formation for improved vision.
Stimulation of endogenous repair mechanisms, provision of cellular support (e.g., stem cells), modulation of extracellular matrix remodeling, and/or reduction of inflammation and fibrosis in the corneal stroma.
