Corneal Surface

Molecular classification
Extracellular Matrix, Epithelium, Collagen
01

Overview

The corneal surface refers to the outermost layer of the cornea, which is a transparent, avascular tissue forming the anterior part of the eye. The cornea acts as a structural barrier and protects internal ocular structures from infection and injury. It also provides most of the eye’s refractive power, contributing to focusing light onto the retina with minimal scatter or optical degradation. Damage or disease affecting this surface can lead to pain, photophobia, tearing, blurred vision, or infection risk. The epithelium heals rapidly after minor abrasions; however, irregularities can cause astigmatism due to altered curvature/focusing ability.
