Overview

The corneal surface mucin layer is the innermost layer of the tear film, directly interfacing with the corneal and conjunctival epithelia. It's composed of membrane-bound mucins (MUC1, MUC4, MUC16) and secreted mucins (MUC5AC, MUC7), providing barrier protection, lubrication, hydration, and tear film stability. Its integrity is crucial for overall ocular health, and disruption can lead to dry eye and increased susceptibility to infection.
