Overview

The corneal tissue osmotic gradient refers to the difference in osmotic pressure across the layers of the cornea, primarily between the stroma and the aqueous humor. This gradient is a critical physiological mechanism that regulates water movement, maintains corneal hydration, and preserves transparency essential for vision. It is maintained by a balance between the swelling pressure of stromal GAGs and the active pumping of ions by the corneal endothelium. Disruptions lead to corneal edema and vision loss.
