Overview

The coronary artery endothelium is the inner cellular lining of the coronary arteries. It is composed of specialized endothelial cells that maintain vascular homeostasis by modulating vessel tone (via release of nitric oxide, prostacyclin, endothelin-1, and other substances), controlling barrier function and selective permeability, regulating thrombosis and fibrinolysis, and directing inflammatory responses. Endothelial dysfunction in the coronary arteries is a critical early determinant of atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease, impairing vasodilation, increasing pro-thrombotic and pro-inflammatory signals, and promoting plaque development and instability.
