Overview

The coronary sinus is the largest vein of the heart, located in the posterior atrioventricular groove between the left atrium and left ventricle. It acts as the main collector of venous blood from the myocardium, draining deoxygenated blood into the right atrium. Several cardiac veins, including the great, middle, and small cardiac veins, and the oblique vein of the left atrium, converge to form the coronary sinus[1][2][4]. Its anatomical prominence and variability make it a crucial landmark for cardiac electrophysiology and surgical procedures[3][5]. The coronary sinus is not a molecular or pharmacological target but is essential for venous drainage and as a conduit for interventional access in certain heart procedures. Congenital anomalies of the coronary sinus, such as atresia or diverticulum, may play a role in disease pathogenesis and procedural complications[3].
