Target intelligence / Profile preview
The coronavirus 3C-like proteinase (3CLpro), also known as main protease (Mpro) or nsp5, is a cysteine protease essential for the viral life cycle of coronaviruses. It cleaves viral polyproteins pp1a and pp1ab at eleven conserved sites, releasing nonstructural proteins necessary for replication and transcription. Its activity is indispensable for viral proliferation, making it an attractive target for antiviral drug development.
