Overview

The **corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cell** is a major cellular component of the penile erectile tissue. Relaxation of these smooth muscle cells is required for penile erection, enabling blood to fill the sinusoids, compress the subtunical venules, and thereby cause tumescence. This relaxation is mediated by several signaling pathways, most notably the nitric oxide (NO)/cGMP and prostaglandin (cAMP) pathways, as well as by hyperpolarization through potassium channels and potentially by other mediators including Rho-kinase pathways. Drugs for erectile dysfunction commonly target these mediators (PDE5 inhibitors, prostaglandins, NO donors). Directly, "corporal cavernosal smooth muscle tissue relaxation" is not a molecular drug target, but the underlying molecular effectors are well-validated targets for ED therapy[3][5][6][2][4].
