Corpus Luteum

Molecular classification
Endocrine gland, Temporary ovarian structure
01

Overview

The corpus luteum is a temporary endocrine structure that forms in the ovary after ovulation. Its primary function is to secrete progesterone, a hormone essential for preparing and maintaining the uterine lining for potential implantation and pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum regresses via a process called luteolysis, primarily triggered by Prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α).
