Overview

Corrosion products refer to the chemical substances, primarily metal ions and particulate oxides, formed by the electrochemical degradation of metallic implants when exposed to the physiological environment. In clinical contexts, these products most commonly originate from orthopedic or dental hardware made of alloys such as cobalt-chromium, stainless steel, or titanium (Source: PubMed, PMID: 24902444). They are not considered therapeutic targets but are pathological byproducts that can trigger adverse local tissue reactions (ALTR), chronic inflammation, and metallosis (Source: StatPearls, NBK560592). The release of these products often leads to periprosthetic osteolysis and eventual aseptic loosening of the implant, necessitating surgical revision (Source: NIH). While they interact with the immune system by inducing macrophage activation and cytokine release, they lack a specific binding site for pharmacological intervention. Consequently, corrosion products are monitored as safety indicators rather than being targeted for drug-based therapeutic modulation (Source: FDA).
