Overview

Cortical neurons are the principal nerve cells of the cerebral cortex, responsible for processing sensory information, executing motor commands, and supporting higher cognitive functions. They comprise a heterogeneous population with diverse molecular profiles and physiological properties. Major classes include excitatory glutamatergic projection neurons and inhibitory GABAergic interneurons. These cells can be further subdivided based on gene expression patterns, firing properties (such as regular-spiking or fast-spiking), morphology, connectivity patterns, and developmental lineage[1][2][3]. Recent advances in single-cell transcriptomics have enabled detailed classification of cortical neuronal subtypes by their unique molecular signatures. While "cortical neuron" is not itself a therapeutic target but rather a broad cell type category encompassing many potential targets (e.g., specific receptors or ion channels expressed by these neurons), understanding their diversity is crucial for neuroscience research and drug development.
