Corticosteroid receptors are intracellular receptors that mediate the effects of corticosteroids, including glucocorticoids (such as cortisol) and mineralocorticoids (such as aldosterone). These receptors play a central role in regulating physiological responses to stress, immune function, metabolism, electrolyte balance, and inflammation. There are two main types: the Glucocorticoid Receptor (GR) and the Mineralocorticoid Receptor (MR). They function as ligand-dependent transcription factors, regulating gene expression upon binding to corticosteroids.
Ligand-dependent transcription factor. Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes, and binds to specific DNA response elements to activate or repress gene transcription.
