Corynebacterium diphtheriae Exotoxin

Molecular classification
Exotoxin, Enzyme, ADP-ribosyltransferase
01

Overview

Diphtheria toxin is a protein exotoxin secreted by *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*. It is an A-B toxin that binds to HBEGFR on host cells and enters the cytoplasm via endocytosis. The A subunit catalyzes ADP-ribosylation of elongation factor 2 (EF-2), inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death. It is responsible for the primary symptoms of diphtheria.
