The cough reflex pathway in the medulla oblongata refers to a network of neurons and associated nuclei within the medulla (notably the nucleus tractus solitarius, or nTS, and surrounding reticular formation) that process sensory input from airway afferents and generate the motor output constituting a cough. Sensory inputs are relayed by the vagus nerve to the medulla, where integration occurs before sending efferent signals via the vagus, phrenic, and spinal motor nerves to the muscles controlling cough.
