Counseling

Counseling is a professional therapeutic intervention focused on helping individuals, couples, or groups resolve personal, social, or psychological challenges through verbal communication and behavioral strategies (NIH, 2023). It is not a biological molecule, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and therefore does not function as a traditional pharmacological target in drug discovery (APA, 2022). Instead, it is a clinical service that facilitates cognitive and emotional processing to manage mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. While often used in conjunction with pharmacotherapy to improve patient outcomes, counseling does not have a molecular structure or a biochemical binding site for drug interaction. Consequently, it cannot be defined by molecular classifications or biological signaling pathways, and its efficacy is measured through psychological assessments rather than molecular biomarkers.
