Overview

COX8C pseudogene 1 (COX8CP1) is a processed pseudogene—that is, a genomic DNA sequence similar to a protein-coding gene but typically without the ability to produce a functional protein product[1][2]. Pseudogenes like COX8CP1 generally arise via duplication or retrotransposition events, resulting in copies that accumulate mutations rendering them transcriptionally or translationally inactive[1]. Many pseudogenes, in general, were long considered "junk DNA," but some are now recognized to have biological roles at the RNA level, such as producing non-coding RNAs that may regulate their parent genes through mechanisms such as acting as microRNA decoys or influencing mRNA stability[1][2]. However, there is no published evidence of COX8CP1 itself having a specific biological function or being implicated as a therapeutic target or biomarker, and it does not interact with drugs nor present direct safety or therapeutic challenges. COX8CP1 should not be confused with protein-coding subunits of cytochrome c oxidase, which are true molecular targets or disease-related factors.
