Coxsackievirus and Adenovirus Receptor (CAR)

Target
CAR
Molecular classification
Type I transmembrane protein, Cell adhesion molecule, Receptor, Immunoglobulin superfamily member
01

Overview

The Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is a transmembrane protein that serves as a primary cellular entry point for group B coxsackieviruses and subgroup C adenoviruses in humans. Beyond its role in viral infection, CAR functions as a cell adhesion molecule, participating in homophilic interactions to stabilize cell-cell contacts, especially at tight junctions in epithelial tissues. It is highly expressed in epithelial cells and cardiac muscle, influencing various biological processes and disease pathologies, including myocarditis and asthma.
