Overview

Coxsackievirus B (CVB) is a group of six serotypes (CVB1–CVB6) of enteroviruses within the Picornaviridae family. These are small, non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. CVBs are pathogenic and can cause a wide range of diseases in humans, from mild febrile illnesses to severe conditions such as myocarditis and aseptic meningitis. Transmission is mainly fecal-oral, but also occurs via oral-oral routes and respiratory droplets. Disease severity depends on age, immune status and other factors. CAR and DAF/CD55 function as entry receptors.
