Overview

The twelve pairs of cranial nerves (CN I-XII) originate from the brain and brainstem, mediating specialized functions such as vision, hearing, and facial movement (StatPearls, NBK547722). The occipital nerves, primarily the greater and lesser occipital nerves, arise from the C2 and C3 spinal nerves and provide sensory innervation to the posterior scalp (StatPearls, NBK542213). While not molecular targets themselves, these nerves are the focus of pharmacological interventions for conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia, and chronic migraines. Drugs such as local anesthetics (e.g., lidocaine) are used to block sodium channels along these nerves, while botulinum toxins are employed to inhibit neurotransmitter release at nerve terminals (NIH, Trigeminal Neuralgia). Because this term describes a broad anatomical grouping rather than a specific protein, receptor, or enzyme, it is classified as an incorrect molecular target designation.
