Cranial nerves and occipital nerves are anatomical structures that serve as critical conduits for sensory, motor, and autonomic information between the brain and the head and neck region. The twelve pairs of cranial nerves (CN I-XII) originate from the brain and brainstem, mediating specialized functions such as vision, hearing, and facial movement (StatPearls, NBK547722). The occipital nerves, primarily the greater and lesser occipital nerves, arise from the C2 and C3 spinal nerves and provide sensory innervation to the posterior scalp (StatPearls, NBK542213). Because this term describes a broad anatomical grouping rather than a specific protein, receptor, or enzyme, it is classified as an incorrect molecular target designation.
