Overview

Creatine kinase (CK), also known as creatine phosphokinase (CPK) or phosphocreatine kinase, is an enzyme critical for cellular energy metabolism, especially in tissues with high and fluctuating energy demands such as skeletal muscle, heart, and brain. CK catalyzes the reversible transfer of a phosphate group from ATP to creatine, forming phosphocreatine and ADP. This reaction is essential for rapid regeneration of ATP during periods of increased energy consumption. Elevated serum CK is used diagnostically to detect acute or chronic damage to muscles.
