Overview

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) antigens are the primary molecular components of the virus that elicit immune responses and serve as targets for therapeutic intervention. These antigens include the nucleoprotein (N), which is essential for viral RNA encapsidation, and the envelope glycoproteins (Gn and Gc), which facilitate viral attachment and entry into host cells (UniProt, 2024). The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L protein) is also a critical target, as it mediates the replication of the viral genome (NCBI, 2023). CCHFV is the causative agent of a severe tick-borne disease characterized by high fever and extensive hemorrhaging, with case fatality rates reaching up to 40% (WHO, 2023). Currently, there are no FDA-approved vaccines or specific antivirals, although ribavirin is often used off-label and several monoclonal antibodies and vaccine candidates targeting these antigens are in development (PubMed, 2022). Therapeutic strategies focus on neutralizing the glycoproteins to prevent infection or inhibiting the L protein to halt viral replication (Nature Communications, 2021).
