CROCCP5 is a pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional sequence of genomic DNA originally derived from the functional CROCC (ciliary rootlet coiled-coil) gene, likely through duplication or retrotransposition. Pseudogenes generally do not encode functional proteins but may have regulatory roles in gene expression, especially in cancer. Some pseudogenes have been shown to act as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), affecting the regulation of other genes through miRNA sequestration networks, but direct evidence for CROCCP5 specifically is unavailable. There is no evidence that CROCCP5 is a protein, receptor, transporter, or any direct therapeutic target—it is a pseudogene and so would not fall into classic categories such as receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. The major, functional gene in this family is CROCC (rootletin), which is a structural component of the ciliary rootlet, involved in centriole-centriole cohesion, cilium assembly, and protein localization to the cilium. However, CROCCP5 does not code for this protein and is instead a nonfunctional remnant. The entry is therefore "incorrect" as a molecular target in the conventional therapeutic sense.
