Cross-Reacting Material 197 (CRM197)

Target
CRM197
Molecular classification
Mutant Protein, Carrier Protein, Toxin Derivative
01

Overview

CRM197 is a genetically detoxified, non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin. It is widely used as a carrier protein in conjugate vaccines to enhance the immunogenicity of polysaccharides and haptens, which are otherwise poorly immunogenic on their own. By covalently linking these antigens to CRM197, the immune system can mount a stronger and more effective T-cell-dependent response. Beyond vaccines, CRM197 has been explored as a drug delivery vehicle and a component in cancer therapies.

Other names
