Overview

Crotalus scutulatus venom, produced by the Mojave rattlesnake, is a complex biological mixture primarily known for its potent neurotoxic and hemotoxic properties. The most significant component is Mojave toxin, a heterodimeric phospholipase A2 that acts presynaptically at the neuromuscular junction to inhibit acetylcholine release, leading to respiratory failure and paralysis [1, 2]. The venom exhibits significant geographic variation, categorized into Phenotype A (predominantly neurotoxic), Phenotype B (predominantly hemorrhagic and proteolytic), and an intermediate Phenotype A+B [3]. Clinical envenomation results in a range of symptoms from severe coagulopathy and tissue necrosis to life-threatening neurological deficits [4]. Therapeutic intervention involves the administration of polyvalent antivenoms, such as Crotalidae Polyvalent Immune Fab or Crotalidae Immune F(ab')2, which consist of antibody fragments designed to sequester and neutralize the various toxic proteins within the venom [5, 6].
