Cryptosporidium antigens represent a collection of immunogenic proteins and glycoproteins expressed on the surface of the Cryptosporidium parasite during various stages of its life cycle, including oocysts, sporozoites, and merozoites (Cevallos et al., 2000, PMID: 10843055). These antigens, most notably the gp60 (gp40/15) complex and the 23 kDa surface protein (Cp23), play critical roles in the parasite's life cycle, specifically in the attachment to and invasion of host intestinal epithelial cells (O'Connor et al., 2011, PMID: 21707316). In the context of disease, they are the primary targets of the host's humoral and cellular immune responses during cryptosporidiosis, a leading cause of severe diarrhea worldwide, particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals (Checkley et al., 2015, PMID: 25535154). While Nitazoxanide is the standard treatment for the infection, it targets metabolic enzymes rather than surface antigens; however, these antigens are the focus of passive immunotherapy, such as hyperimmune bovine colostrum, and ongoing vaccine development efforts (White, 2006, PMID: 16417181). Diagnostic platforms also utilize these antigens as biomarkers for detecting the parasite in clinical samples through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and immunochromatographic tests (Priest et al., 2001, PMID: 11133140).
