Overview

The **crystalline lens** is a transparent, biconvex anatomical structure within the eye that focuses light onto the retina, enabling clear vision. It consists mainly of extremely concentrated, long-lived soluble proteins called **crystallins** (including α-crystallin, β-crystallin, and γ-crystallin superfamilies). These proteins ensure high refractive index and lifelong transparency. The lens is not a single molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or channel; rather, it is a complex tissue composed primarily of specialized fiber cells packed with crystallins. Dysfunction and aggregation of crystallins, due to mutations or aging, are a principal cause of cataract, the leading cause of blindness worldwide[1][2][3][4][5]. **Notes:** "Crystalline lens" refers to an anatomical tissue, not to a single molecule, receptor, or functional molecular target. The major relevant molecular targets in the lens are its protein constituents—the *crystallins*—which are sometimes studied or targeted for therapeutic intervention. For structured information requests concerning pharmacological or molecular 'targets', the lens as a whole should be flagged as **not a valid target** according to standard conventions.
