Crystalline Lens Flexibility

Overview

Crystalline lens flexibility refers to the ability of the lens in the eye to change its shape and curvature, allowing for clear vision at various distances. This flexibility is crucial for accommodation, the process of focusing light onto the retina. It is dependent on the molecular integrity of lens proteins (crystallins, especially alpha-crystallin) and the biomechanical properties of the lens capsule and zonular fibers. Loss of flexibility is the primary cause of presbyopia, an age-related condition that affects near vision.
