CsgA is the major structural subunit of curli fibers, which are functional amyloid fibers produced by Escherichia coli and other enteric bacteria. Curli fibers are a primary component of the extracellular matrix in bacterial biofilms, contributing to cell adhesion, colonization, and resistance to antibiotics. CsgA is secreted as a soluble protein and assembles into amyloid fibrils on the cell surface, nucleated by CsgB. Targeting CsgA could disrupt biofilm formation and reduce bacterial virulence.
