Overview

CTNNA1 antisense RNA 1 (CTNNA1-AS1) is a long noncoding natural antisense transcript complementary to the CTNNA1 gene. Antisense RNAs like CTNNA1-AS1 are known to regulate the expression of their sense gene at multiple levels, including transcriptional interference, chromatin remodeling, mRNA stability, and translational control. Although no specific studies are published on the molecular mechanisms or disease associations of CTNNA1-AS1, similar NATs have been implicated in cancer and other disease processes by regulating their sense gene. CTNNA1 itself encodes alpha-catenin, which is critical for cell adhesion and acts as a tumor suppressor, so CTNNA1-AS1 may influence tumorigenesis through control of CTNNA1 expression.

Mechanism of action

Drugs (ASOs) targeting antisense lncRNAs generally act by promoting RNA degradation, modulating splicing, blocking translation, or interfering with regulatory interactions. For CTNNA1-AS1, ASO or RNAi-based approaches could theoretically suppress its expression, which might affect CTNNA1 levels, but no specific mechanism is published.
