cucurbitin

Molecular classification
Other (naturally occurring amino acid/plant secondary metabolite)
01

Overview

Cucurbitin is a naturally occurring amino acid primarily found in seeds of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as pumpkins, squashes, and gourds. It is best known for its anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) properties, notably its ability to paralyze and help eliminate intestinal worms, including roundworms and tapeworms. The compound is widely used as a traditional remedy for intestinal helminth infections in both human and veterinary medicine. While its efficacy is supported by preclinical and some clinical studies, cucurbitin describes a bioactive compound rather than a conventional molecular target like a receptor or enzyme.

Mechanism of action

Paralysis of worms, which allows their expulsion from the body. Potential disruption of worm energy metabolism, muscle function, or cuticle integrity (suggested by related anthelmintic plant compounds, but direct mechanisms for cucurbitin are not fully elucidated).

03

Biological functions

Paralyze intestinal wormsFacilitate expulsion of parasitic worms
04

Disease associations

Infection (specifically parasitic worm/helminth infections)Other (anthelmintic/anti-parasitic therapy)
05

Safety considerations

Generally recognized as safe when consumed in food amounts (pumpkin seeds)No significant reports of toxicity or notable adverse effects from dietary intakesLack of established dosing guidelines for extracts in clinical settings
06

Interacting drugs

None (cucurbitin is itself the active compound; it is not a protein or receptor)

07

Biomarkers

None specific to cucurbitin activity; efficacy sometimes monitored by reduction in worm egg counts or fecal parasite burden
