CUGBP Elav-like family member 4 (CELF4) is a neuron-enriched RNA-binding protein that plays a vital role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, especially in the central nervous system[1][3][6]. It is characterized by multiple RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) that enable it to regulate alternative splicing, mRNA stability, and translation[1][7]. CELF4 expression is primarily found in excitatory neurons in the brain, where it controls the abundance and localization of mRNAs important for synaptic development and function[2][3][6]. Disruption or deficiency of CELF4 is linked to neurological disorders such as epilepsy and autism spectrum disorder, as mouse models show increased cortical excitability and seizures upon CELF4 loss[2][7]. Recent research has also implicated CELF4 in pathological cardiac remodeling, especially fibrosis and heart failure, positioning it as an emerging therapeutic target in both neurological and cardiovascular disease[4]. No known drugs directly target CELF4, and its role as a clinical biomarker or safety considerations are still under investigation.
