Overview

Culture filtrate protein 10 (CFP-10, also known as ESXA or Rv3874) is a secreted antigen and virulence factor of *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* that plays a critical role in tuberculosis pathogenesis. CFP-10 forms a tight, functionally essential complex with ESAT-6, essential for bacterial virulence and for modulation of host immune responses, particularly by interacting with macrophages and monocytes. The CFP-10/ESAT-6 complex binds specifically to the surface of host cells, likely modulating cell behavior through signaling roles which further the pathogen's survival. CFP-10 secretion and activity are tightly regulated; post-translational modification such as phosphorylation alters its secretion profile and, consequently, bacterial survival and virulence. Although not a direct target of approved therapeutics, CFP-10 is a major diagnostic antigen for tuberculosis and an active research focus for vaccine and inhibitor development[1][2][3][4].
