Overview

Curium-244 is a synthetic radioactive isotope of the transuranic element curium, characterized by a physical half-life of approximately 18.1 years (NRC, 2020). It is not a biological target for drug development but is recognized as a significant radiological hazard and environmental contaminant produced within nuclear reactors. Upon entering the human body via inhalation or ingestion, curium-244 acts as a bone-seeker, depositing primarily on bone surfaces and in the liver, where its high-energy alpha particle emissions cause localized cellular damage and DNA double-strand breaks (EPA, 2023). There are no therapeutic drugs that target curium-244 to treat a disease; instead, medical management is restricted to decorporation therapy using chelating agents like DTPA to facilitate its removal from the body (CDC, 2014). Beyond its toxicological profile, curium-244 is utilized industrially as a heat source for radioisotope thermoelectric generators and as an alpha source for scientific instruments such as the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer used in planetary exploration (NASA, 2012).

Mechanism of action

Curium-244 is not a therapeutic target; however, chelating agents like diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) interact with curium ions in the bloodstream to form stable, water-soluble complexes that are rapidly excreted by the kidneys, thereby reducing the internal radiation dose (CDC, 2014).
