Overview

Curium-244 is a radioactive isotope of the transuranic element curium, primarily produced through neutron capture in nuclear reactors (EPA, 2022). It is not a therapeutic target but is instead recognized as a significant radiotoxicant and environmental hazard. As an alpha-emitter with a physical half-life of approximately 18.1 years, it poses a severe internal radiation risk if inhaled or ingested (CDC, 2023). Once inside the body, curium ions tend to concentrate in the skeleton and liver, where they mimic the chemical behavior of calcium and can remain for decades (ICRP, 1994). The resulting localized alpha radiation causes significant DNA damage, leading to an increased risk of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) and hematopoietic disorders (ATSDR, 2004). There are no drugs that target Curium-244 for therapeutic benefit; medical management is restricted to decorporation using chelating agents like diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to facilitate excretion and reduce the body burden (FDA, 2004).
