Target intelligence / Profile preview
"Cutaneous immune response" refers to the complex and coordinated activity of the skin's immune system in defending against pathogens, toxins, and malignancies. The skin acts as both a physical barrier and an active immunological organ containing elements of innate and adaptive immunity. Key cellular players include keratinocytes (which express pattern-recognition receptors like Toll-like receptors), Langerhans cells (antigen-presenting dendritic cells in the epidermis), dermal dendritic cells, macrophages, mast cells, T lymphocytes (including resident memory T cells), B lymphocytes, and others. These components work together to detect pathogens or abnormal signals through antigen presentation and cytokine signaling; they then recruit additional immune effectors from circulation as needed. Dysregulation of cutaneous immunity is implicated in various inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis[1][2][3]. The term "cutaneous immune response" does not refer to a specific molecular target but rather describes an entire physiological process involving many cell types and molecules. Because "cutaneous immune response" is not a single molecule or receptor but rather a broad biological process involving multiple cell types and pathways within the skin's immunological network[1][3], it should not be considered a canonical therapeutic target for drug development purposes.
