Cutaneous Protease

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Serine Protease, Cysteine Protease, Aspartate Protease, Matrix Metalloprotease (MMP)
01

Overview

Cutaneous proteases are enzymes present in the skin that catalyze the breakdown of proteins into smaller peptides or amino acids. They play essential roles in maintaining skin homeostasis, mediating processes such as epidermal barrier function, desquamation, inflammation, immune responses, wound healing, and defense against pathogens. Dysregulation or abnormal activity of cutaneous proteases is implicated in several skin diseases.
