Cutaneous Sensory Nerve Ending

Molecular classification
Sensory Neuron, Receptor complex
01

Overview

Cutaneous sensory nerve endings are specialized structures in the skin that transduce various external stimuli (touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, and pain) into electrical signals that are transmitted to the central nervous system. They include free nerve endings, Merkel cell-neurite complexes, Meissner corpuscles, Ruffini endings, Pacinian corpuscles and hair follicle receptors, each with distinct morphology and function. These receptors play a crucial role in somatic sensation and protective reflexes.

Mechanism of action

Local anesthetics block sodium channels, preventing nerve impulse generation. Analgesics reduce pain signaling. Capsaicin depletes substance P from nerve endings. Tricyclic antidepressants and anticonvulsants modulate neuronal excitability.
