Cutaneous sensory nerves are peripheral nerve fibers that provide sensory innervation to the skin, transmitting signals for touch, pressure, pain, temperature, and itch to the central nervous system via dorsal root ganglia neurons. These include myelinated A-beta fibers for mechanoreception, thinly myelinated A-delta fibers for acute pain and cold, and unmyelinated C-fibers for polymodal nociception, warmth, and itch, often expressing receptors like TRPV1, TRPM8, and Mrgpr for specific stimuli.[2][3][4][6] They originate from spinal levels C5-T1 and form plexuses in the dermis and epidermis, also carrying sympathetic efferents to regulate blood vessels, sweat glands, and hair follicles.[1][3][5][9] In disease, reduced density of these nerves serves as a biomarker for small fiber neuropathies and conditions like Parkinson's, where alpha-synuclein aggregates in nociceptive fibers.[3][10] While not typical therapeutic targets like receptors or enzymes, they are modulated indirectly in pain management via local anesthetics or anti-inflammatory drugs, though specific drugs directly targeting these nerves are limited, posing challenges like sensory deficits.[1][3][6]
