Overview

Cutibacterium acnes antigens are molecular components of the Gram-positive bacterium C. acnes, which is a primary driver of the inflammatory skin condition acne vulgaris (StatPearls, 2023). These antigens include secreted enzymes such as lipases and proteases, as well as key virulence factors like Christie-Atkins-Munch-Petersen (CAMP) factors and sialidases (PubMed, 2018). When these antigens interact with the host immune system, they activate Toll-like receptors, particularly TLR2, triggering a cascade of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-1β and IL-8 (NIH, 2021). Therapeutic strategies targeting these antigens focus on the development of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies designed to neutralize bacterial toxicity and reduce inflammation without the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics (Sanofi, 2023). By specifically targeting virulence factors, these therapies aim to treat acne while preserving the skin's natural microbial balance. Beyond dermatology, C. acnes antigens are also investigated for their roles in systemic infections and chronic inflammatory diseases like sarcoidosis (UniProt, 2024).
