Overview

The cuticular lipid layer is the outermost hydrophobic barrier of the arthropod exoskeleton, primarily composed of long-chain hydrocarbons, fatty acids, and esters (Blomquist & Bagnères, 2010). Its most critical biological function is the prevention of lethal desiccation by minimizing trans-cuticular water loss, which is essential for survival in terrestrial environments (Gibbs, 1998). Additionally, this layer serves as a primary defense against environmental pathogens and acts as a medium for chemical signaling through cuticular hydrocarbons. In pest management and vector control, the cuticular lipid layer is a major target for desiccant dusts like diatomaceous earth and silica gel. These agents act by adsorbing or abrading the lipids, leading to rapid dehydration and death of the organism (Subramanyam & Roesli, 2000). Furthermore, the composition of this layer significantly influences the penetration efficiency of contact insecticides, such as pyrethroids and organophosphates. This makes the lipid layer a key factor in both insecticide resistance and the design of effective pesticide formulations. It is also a target for horticultural oils and surfactants that disrupt the wax structure to increase the efficacy of other treatments (Beattie et al., 1995).
