Overview
The cyanocobalamin-dependent enzyme system refers to enzymes that require cobalamin (vitamin B12) as a cofactor for their catalytic activity. Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of vitamin B12 commonly used in supplements and laboratory studies. Within cells, it is converted into the active coenzyme forms: methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. These active forms are essential for the function of several key enzymes in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, including methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase. Deficiency or dysfunction leads to impaired DNA synthesis/repair and accumulation of toxic metabolites.
