Overview

Cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase, commonly known as protein kinase A (PKA), is a serine/threonine-specific protein kinase whose activity is regulated by the cellular concentration of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). PKA plays a central role in regulating various cellular processes, including: Glycogen metabolism, Sugar and lipid metabolism, Gene expression and regulation, Cell growth and differentiation. It acts as one of the primary effectors in the cAMP signaling pathway.

Mechanism of action

PKA's activity is modulated by cAMP binding, leading to the release of active catalytic subunits that phosphorylate downstream target proteins. Protein kinase inhibitors can also bind to free catalytic units to decrease their activity.
