Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) to adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP), thereby regulating intracellular cAMP levels. It plays a key role in cardiovascular physiology, modulating cardiac contractility and vascular smooth muscle tone. PDE3 exists as isoforms encoded by PDE3A and PDE3B. Selective PDE3 inhibitors like milrinone are used in the acute management of congestive heart failure, but chronic use has safety concerns.
