The cyclic AMP transporter is a membrane protein responsible for the translocation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) across cellular membranes. While cAMP itself is a well-characterized second messenger involved in numerous signaling pathways, specific transporters that mediate its movement into or out of cells are less extensively described in the literature compared to its synthesis and degradation mechanisms. In eukaryotic cells, while most regulation occurs through synthesis/degradation rather than direct transmembrane transport, there is evidence suggesting that certain multidrug resistance proteins (MRPs/ABCC family) can export cyclic nucleotides including cAMP under specific physiological conditions. Understanding putative mammalian cyclic AMP transporters could reveal new layers of control over cell signaling networks—potentially offering novel therapeutic targets where aberrant compartmentalization or clearance contributes to pathology.
